Basic Rules

Typing words (e.g. shelter Portland) searches for pages containing both “shelter” and “Portland.”

Using Quotes " " searches for an exact phrase. For example "Central City Concern"

Case insensitive: Shelter = shelter

Boolean Operators

AND         shelter AND housing      Both terms must appear
OR          shelter OR housing       Either term may appear
NOT         shelter NOT housing      Must include “Portland” but exclude “Eugene”
- (minus)   shelter -housing         Same as NOT
+ (plus)    +Portland +shelter       Both required (like AND)

Wildcards

(asterisk) can replace part of a word:

shel* finds shelter, shelters, sheltering, etc.

No full-page wildcards Can’t do *shelter

Using Single Words Together

Try combining single words first, such as SHELTER PORTLAND WOMEN.

Find all shelters in Multnomah County:

Sometimes words overlap, such as city and county names. To get exact results with no unintended matches, use category-specific search terms:

Find all food services in Washington County:
